Why I hadden’t switched to the Tag’s built into Core.

Finally I can switch to the Tag’s that are in the core of WordPress! I figured I’d find a plugin that would allow me to do this eventually and the day has come. I found a simple plugin called “WP Tags to Technorati” that links the text of the Tag line to the Technorati link for that tag! It’s such a simple thing and it SHOULD have been part of the core but it wasn’t. I’d bet in the future they will copy the code to core but for now it’s an easy install and setup. Some of you may ask why I want to use the Tag in Core so bad. My reason is so third party apps, like Flock which I’m using to write this as well as other desktop apps and web apps like Clipmarks, can now tag posts you make from them.

Blogged with Flock

Upon posting I find out that the tag’s that flock add automatically link to technorati but that do not add them to the tag database in your wordpress install. That sucks!

Important Tip about Google Readers New Features

You’ve likely hear about the new “social” features in Google Reader that automatically show you your GTalk/GChat friends Reader Shared Items. If you haven’t Chris Brogan did a good job as well as a ton of other blogs and news site. You can access the features by going to your account settings and clicking on Friends. They have done a pretty good job with it and I like the feature. I’ve subscribed to a lot of peoples feed and I’ve posted about it here before and they make it super easy to use. Adding new feeds is as easy as adding a person in GTalk, actually that is exactly how you add their feed, and hiding their items is just as easy, in the Friends settings just click “Hide” or from an individual feed view you can click on “Hide” at the top of the list.

.
The real reason I started this post is a thought I had while I was mucking around with the feature and my last blog post showed up in my feeds. I know a lot of people subscribe to their own site, mostly to make sure the feed works, and I do this too and a while back there was talk about generating traffic by “sharing” your own posts when they show up in your reader. I personally don’t do this with my own blog posts, I do with some of the meetup stuff I deal with to help get the word out and have more people attend real face to face meetings but as a general rule I find it kind of annoying because if I’ve subscribed to your Shared Feed I also likely find you important enough to subscribe directly to your blog/podcast feed already. I see that same posts over and over which in the already flooded river of news I don’t need.

.
My point with this is that now that your shared items will automagically show up in peoples reader it probably even more effective to share your own stuff!

Meet Up in Hamilton

I’ve wanted to meet up with the folks down in Hamilton for a while now so I put out the call and Wayne jumped on the chance and set something up. We are going to be getting together Thursday January 3rd at noon for lunch in Hamilton at Skydragon Centre 27 King William St. There is also a Facebook event set up for the event. Anyone interested is invited to come out, unfortunately I don’t think I can car pool with anyone from London as I’m hoping to set up a dinner with some family later that day!

Lousy service? Canadians spread the word, says retailer

A chain of big-box home improvement stores says the typical Canadian retail customer behaves quite differently from an American when faced with disappointing service.

An American is likely to “scream at you, but then come back the next day,” Verschuren said.

“A Canadian customer doesn’t scream — they just quietly walk out of your store and never come back, but tell 50 people,” she said in an interview with the Canadian Press.

The Canadian home improvement industry is growing on Monday as U.S. giant Lowe’s opens its first Canadian stores, in the Ontario cities of Brampton, Brantford and Hamilton.

A television commercial airing in local markets shows a cashier practising the company’s policy, which says that every time a lineup is longer than three customers, another cashier will open up a new till.

Put the camera in the flex tri-pod and drove a less direct but nicer route to work on a snowy day. I figured what better then to put it all to some podsafe Christmas music! Thanks to Uncle Seth, Codie Prevost and the Podsafe Music Network.
