Country Music Cast 56

I got an email an email a while back, too long and that’s my fault, from David Kraut. David is a songwriter and was interested in getting his music feature on the show. He put some songs on the Podsafe Music Network and well here they are! He is the songwriter for all three tracks and I think it’s kind of a neat thing to have that and three different singers. It really shows a diversity in the songwriting! Hope you like the show.

A Day Job and A Dream – Missi Hale
Don’t Listen – Ken Johnson
Liquid Sunshine – Shiela Harrison

Check out the Niagara Meetup if your going to be in the area! And thanks to the sponsors of that event, David Peralty of xfep.com, Wayne MacPahil of W8NC, CastRoller and Magnatune.

Vuze/Azureus Could Change Media Consumption

Over the last while I’ve stepped up my cross site content publishing. Tube Mogul is amazing for getting video to almost every video site that you can. The other place I’ve turned to to release content to is the often over looked Vuze network.
.
Vuze is the network that has been set up to feed into the Azureus Bit Torrent Client. Go check out Bit Torrent on Wikipedia if your not familier but to quickly get you up to speed it’s a very efficient way to distribute large files using a distributed peer to peer structure.

.

As a content network Vuze has amazing potential, and already has a pretty good audience as well as people feeding content into it. You can publish audio or video to the network, either way you have to agree to terms that state that you legally own the rights and whatnot. Can it be used to distribute copyrighted works, probably but I’d bet it would get taken down very soon after you upload. I’ve not had a probelm putting my Country Music Cast up there and I’ve actually gotten a good number of downloads to some. I’ve even been amazed at the numebr of video views I gotten! I don’t get a lot of traffic but I get as many there as I usually get on most other site combined.

.

The huge advantage that Vuze has is they can easily handle very large files, such as HD video, and I think it’s almost easier to publish there then it is to get stuff up on something like Blip.tv and cross post to my blog. There is also money making options, one via an ad program and revenue share and the old fashioned pay per view model. As a viewer the interface can be a little confusing at first but I think it’s pretty good once you get used to it. You can search for publishers as well as keywords and to watch the video in Vuze’s included player it’s just a click away.

.

Despite all the things I like in Vuze there are a few things I think need to be added. They need Publisher Channels for all a publishers media as well as the ability to add sub channels for separate shows. RSS in the client, there is on the website but not in the client, and the ability to subscribe to the media, at least bookmark publishers. These are not big things, it’s just a little easier to keep track of your favorite publishers.

.

Have you played around with Vuze? How about publishing to Bit Torrent on other trackers? Any success, places I should check out?

Restaurant service-fee policy angers employees and patrons

clipped from www.cleveland.com

Sunday, I told you about Yours Truly, a Cleveland-area restaurant chain that now deducts a percentage of the processing fee from tips left on charge cards.

Most customers, and I’ve heard from hundreds of them so far, don’t agree. They think it’s unfair to deduct a fee from the tips of servers who depend on gratuities to make minimum wage, and it’s unethical to hide this practice from the public.

Then she explained that, not only does the restaurant deduct the charge card fee from her tips, but she must also contribute 3 percent of the net sale of every table she serves, regardless of how much she is tipped.

“Half of that 3 percent goes to the bussers and the hostesses,” she said. “The other half goes to the house.” My turn to be stunned.

“The house? You mean management keeps half of the money deducted from your tips?”

  blog it
Ok so hear is my thing, the restaurant has to pay anywhere from 1.5 to 3% service fee to the credit card company on the total run through on the bill. So on a $100 dinner they loose $3, not a big deal food is a pretty high markup item and it’s likely accounted for.

So the issue people are having is they don’t think it should come off the tip! Why the hell not, you think the restaurant should have to suck it up, which by the way will not happen! One way or another they will pass that along to either you the customer by raising the price a bit more or they will just pay the server a bit less.

I’m a little troubled by the article as well, my issue is in the last couple bits I clipped. I find it misleading, I had to read it a couple times to get it straight. The restaurant take a 3% cut and splits it two ways. Half that to the bussers and hostesses and the other half to the “house.” So to recap that 1.5% of the tip goes to the other employees and 1.5% of the tip is held by the restaurant. Now they made it sound like half the entire tip goes to the house which from what I gather is not true. Now this I do not agree with, I think that yes, they bussers and hostesses should get a piece of the tip, they helped earn it but the house should NOT be taking any tip more from anywhere!

See You on The Internets

A funny thing happens when you leave a lunch meeting, meetup, or conference with a bunch of podcasters. Normally, in non social media (read geek) circles, you’d say goodbye to all your friends and make plans to get together again sometime. But leaving a social media gathering it’s a different good bye. You don’t have to arrange anything, usually by the time you get home, sometimes even before, the conversation continues online, or via mobile.
.
It happens on Twitter, Plurk, Identi.ca, Facebook, wherever but it continues. It happens before a particular meeting too, your chatting about things that you’d like to get more in depth about, or gadgets that someone has that you’d like to see. The nature of connection has changed, it’s much more fluid now.
.
By the way, if you’d like to meet some cool people and your in the Niagara region, or would like to make a trip there, come out to the Niagara Meetup Aug 16th. I’ll be presenting a bit on video online and there is going to a bunch of other really great sessions. The area is full of other things to do. I’ll be up on the Friday before till Sunday, and I’m hoping to get to some of my favorite wineries with some of you cool people. Bring your whole family too, there is plenty to do. You can go to http://niagarameetup.org/ or follow @niagaraotl2008 on Twitter. Hope to see you there!
