So Apple has the pull down to refresh thing in the sdk, works amazing for all sorts of things. Refresh twitter, gowalla, etc. I wish everyone would implement it instead of a button. Like tumblr, and especially Mail! Why doesn’t apple use the nicest method for things in it’s own app?
Podcasting is like sex: you are either an amateur or a whore.
Who really wants to be marketed to?We have things like TiVo to skip ads on TV, and ad blockers to hide the banners on websites. I think that is some proof of my point. So why do people think it could be even remotely effective to JUST push ads on social sites? Really think! We don’t like to be interrupted when we can’t control it so we build new tools to gain back the control. With all these social sites the control is baked into them from the start. That is where the phrase “permission based marketing” came from. Users who choose to follow you are giving you SOME permission to market to them. Abuse the privilege that the user has the control to unfollow you.So how do you get, and keep, followers. We first let me ask you a question. Don’t you like to support that guy you know in the shoe business more then the chain store that interrupts the finale of LOST? Be that guy you know. When you’re on Twitter don’t just push links. Be a real person, talk a bit about what you are having for lunch, about the hockey game last night. If people see you as that person, then you are that guy they know who is in the shoe business and when they go looking for shoes guess whose name will pop up!
So I’ve taken a break from Twitter, hell I’ve barely been playing SpyMaster. After about four or five days I’m not really missing most of it. A couple of times I’ve though about seeing who’s around to grab a coffee or something but aside from that it’s not been a big deal. I would like to have some sort of connection with the folks I really care to connect with. For the most part its the local folks that I’d like that for. I’ve considered a couple of options. One was setting up an IRC chat room of some sort to hang out in. The other was setting up a new Twitter account!I’m even to the point where I think I’m over most of my thoughts being about 140 characters!
I’ve heard a lot of people who are becoming the “social media professional” at their place of employment because they are already on Twitter or have had a blog for a while and I’m not on board with this attitude.Sure they might be the most knowledgeable person around but they may not be the right person for the job. Now I have to say that sure everyone has a different opinion as to what each company should be doing in the social media space but there are a lot of right and wrongs for everyone.I do believe that anyone who is going to be the go to person for social media should have a blog, be on facebook and use Twitter but this does not a social media Sherpa make.I’ve had some discussions with people to try and come up with a way to qualify people and it’s not an easy task to accomplish. There are a lot of snake oil salespeople out there as well as a lot of people that deserve a lot more attention for what they are doing. The big question is how can we make it easy for those looking for a little help in this space to find the person who is right for them?
I’m listening to Wayne MacPhail and Frances Willick’s PodCamp Toronto 2009 session on Social Media and Higher Ed thanks to Robin Browne’s Being Buff podcast feed and after hearing the video (i know…) I thought
“Ask not what Twitter can do for you, but what you can do for the Twitter Community.”
Ya see it seams that some of the students saw Twitter as a vehicle to Get information rather then to ALSO Give it!
I had a cool idea on how Twitter can make some money, possibly lots, and take care of some of the user name squatters out there! So look at the user names of some of the business users. For example @lfpress, is the account the London Free Press puts news on but DanAtLFPress and SteveAtLFPress is the accounts that you can chat with the people there. Maybe Twitter should charge the Free Press to stop other people from having a name that follows that convention and maybe more to stop anyone from using lfpress in a user name at all! Just a random idea I had, I could probably think it through and fire a bunch of holes in the idea, but such is brainstorming! So guys just give me 1% for the first year and the idea is yours! Ah hell let me know your going to use it then blog about me being the spark for the idea and link me! The traffic is worth more!
Well TweetDeck isn’t updating and it’s failing to send my Tweets so over to Is Twitter Down? I head and Yep, seams they’re having issues today! Perhaps there is a flood from Skittles! Anyways as I said in a video about a month ago, I’m not going to panic and find where everyone went. I’m using this to step away from the rush of Twitter. Couldn’t happen at a better time at work either, I’ve got a lot of stuff going on and I need the focus!
