So there is finally a way for anyone with a jailbroken ipod to upgrade to the new apple 1.1.3 firmware. If your running on 1.1.1 jailbroken you have to upgrade to 1.1.2 then all you have to do is go to the Installer app and “Install” the “Official 1.1.3 Upgrader.” It’s actually easier to upgrade from 1.1.2 to 1.1.3 then it is to go from 1.1.1 to 1.1.2. Now unfortunately if you have 1.1.2 or 1.1.3 on your device and your not jailbroken you have a tougher time. It still doable, you just have to downgrade to 1.1.1 and use the super easy JailbreakMe method for breaking 1.1.1 then go through the whole upgrade cycle. Upon the first reboot after the 1.1.3 upgrade I did loose all my installed apps which is no big deal..My big reason for wanting to upgrade was to be able to rearrange the apps, and to use webclips. The first thing I tried was to get the wobbly icons by holding one of the icons and nothing happened! I didn’t know if there was some kind of trick to it so skipped that and tried going into Safari and creating a WebClip and there was no menu icon to do that either. I was starting to think that you had to purchase the $20 “January Software Upgrade” application package to get these features. Upon inspection of the apple site and the item description in the iTunes store it became apparent that you did have to have the paid software to use the features not just to have the apps. This is a little frustrating and it is true, after buying and installing, which is as simple as clicking buy in the itunes store and syncing your device, the applications are there and the WebClips and Icon rearrangement features work..The WebClips works great, as advertised, and I love now having the ability to rearrange the icons. For me I would have likely paid $5 for just that and not bought the other applications but since I have them I obviously played with them. The Notes application is kind of nice, probably the handiest application that I haven’t needed yet as I usually have my Moleskine with me more often the just my iPod. The Weather and Stocks are both nice slick looking and feeling apps. A lot like widgets you find on you Macs dashboard which I’ve never really gotten. I do like having a real easy way to check the weather while I don’t have my computer out as I usually have my iPod handier while I’m at home. Stock will likely keep my better informed on the current status of the few stock I do have, although I haven’t found myself using it as much. Mail is kinda useless on the Touch as you have to be connected to WiFi to use it which isn’t the end of the world, I have my Blackberry for most of my mobile email needs and I can’t stand typing on the Touch anyways. The most useless app in the pack to have on a Touch in and is probably the best on the iPhone is of course the Maps. I don’t know about you but even in the middle of London there isn’t anywhere near 100% WiFi coverage and you NEED it to even view a map. I can see how this is killer on the iPhone where you can use the cell network to get the maps and POI information and I’m guessing, because of better coverage, using the cell networks to triangulate your position works far better..If you ask me unless WebClips and moving application order is that big a deal for you it’s not necessary to pay for the upgrade. Who knows why Apple finely opens the Touch for third party applications maybe it will be locked to only people who have bought the software but we’ll have to wait to see.
Well the problems continued. Thanks Cat for the tip off that the shows were not being linked to from my site and in my feeds. The problem was the version of PodPress I was using had abug that would not post the enclosure info. I took the info and looked like it was doing the right thing on the admin end but after posting POOF it was gone. They have a new version up already that I installed and it seams to be working. Stay tuned for a new DeysCast tomorrow (hopefully!) and who knows when we’ll see a CMC.
